Operations Controller Spartan is seeking an individual to fulfill the responsibilities of an Operations Controller to join the Finance & Accounting team. This role is primarily responsible for effectively managing the operational accounting teams, delivering accurate and reliable operational and capital results in accordance with IFRS standards, and adhering to C-SOX controls to meet reporting standards and obligations to shareholders.

This is a full-time, in-office position based in our downtown Calgary location.

What You Will Do Provide strategic oversight of operational accounting activities including Joint Venture Accounting, Production Accounting, Royalties, Capital Accounting, and Accounts Payable, leading a team of 20+ accounting staff. Serve as the subject matter expert on core operational agreements (CO&O, CAPL, PASC, JOA, Gas Handling, Pad Sharing, Contract Operating), regulatory requirements (Directives 7, 17 and 60), marketing arrangements, royalty frameworks, and operational accounting practices within the oil and gas sector. Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, reporting, and governance requirements including IFRS, C-SOX controls, financial audits, and industry-specific filings. Oversee the preparation and review of operational and capital reporting, account reconciliations, accruals, partner settlements, and financial analyses to support decision-making and business performance. Partner with Engineering, Operations, Marketing & Joint Venture, and Finance teams to support business initiatives, optimize reporting accuracy, and improve operational efficiencies. Support A&D activity and system implementations, ensuring accurate setup, integration, and reporting. Collaborate with the Joint Venture commercial team on processing fee structures and commitments while overseeing internal and external joint venture audits. Oversee the preparation and submission of all regulatory and industry filings, including ESTMA, EPAP, and GCA reporting requirements. Review and approve key quarterly account reconciliations for the various accounts receivables, GORR/FH payables, GORR Income, Cash to Marketing, and other account reconciliations. Provide Data Analytics Cube and Power BI training to various teams within the organization. Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives. Maintain and develop a high-performing team by fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and operational excellence. Who You Are Minimum 15 years of accounting experience, including several years in a senior leadership role preferably with a publicly traded company within the oil and gas industry. Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline; a professional designation (CPA) and/or MBA is considered an asset. Demonstrated experience working within a public company environment, with a strong understanding of governance, compliance, and reporting requirements. Proven experience supporting A&D activity including the integration, implementation, and optimization of financial systems, processes, and data management frameworks. Strong business acumen and comprehensive knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry, including operational, commercial, and financial drivers. Strong understanding of the functions and output of various systems including Qbyte FM, Metrix, AFE Nav, OpenInvoice, Data Analytics Cube and Power BI reporting. High standards of personal and professional integrity, with a demonstrated commitment to accountability, collaboration, and ethical decision-making. Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
