About the role
Investment Analyst, Special Situations Murchinson is looking for a highly motivated and ambitious self-starter to join our investment team as an Investment Analyst covering Special Situations. The candidate will be responsible for analyzing investment opportunities, conducting research across a wide range of financial instruments, and monitoring portfolio performance.
Responsibilities The analyst will be responsible for: Conducting detailed analysis of public companies and financial instruments, including equities, fixed income securities, and derivatives, with a focus on distressed investing, capital structure arbitrage, event-driven opportunities, and special situations. Identifying actionable investment opportunities with clear catalysts. Monitoring portfolio performance and making recommendations to optimize returns. Conducting research on the macroeconomic environment, specific industries, and individual companies to support investment decisions. Communicating findings and investment recommendations to senior members of the investment team in a clear and concise manner. Collaborating with other members of the investment team to develop and implement investment strategies. Staying up to date with developments in financial markets, including regulatory changes, market structure, and new financial products.
Trade Idea Requirement In order to be considered for an initial interview, candidates must submit a detailed trade idea on a public company. The trade idea should clearly outline the type of trade, such as distressed, arbitrage, event-driven long/short, capital structure arbitrage, or another catalyst-driven special situation. Any exchange or financial instrument is acceptable, including equities, fixed income, futures, or derivatives. Each idea must include: A clear investment thesis. A defined catalyst. Risk evaluation. Expected PnL analysis. Fundamental or directional long/short trade ideas without a clear catalyst will not be accepted.
Candidate Requirements Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, business, mathematics, engineering, or another relevant field. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in finance, investing, investment banking, accounting, or asset management is helpful but not required. Highly ambitious self-starter with an above-and-beyond attitude. Strong interest in special situations, distressed investing, capital structure arbitrage, and public markets. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Strong accounting and financial statement analysis skills, or a demonstrated ability to learn quickly. Financial modeling experience is helpful but not required. Interest in equities, fixed income securities, derivatives, and complex financial instruments. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and take ownership of work.
This position is based on-site at our Toronto office, located at 145 Adelaide Street West. Compensation
