About the role
Location: South-West Part of Montreal, near Highway 20 Permanent, Full-Time - ON SITE.
Picture this.
An accounting team that knows its stuff. AP technicians who are sharp. Accountants who show up ready. One of them has been there for 20 years. Yes, twenty years. That tells you everything about what kind of place this is. A Credit Manager who runs a tight AR department. People who actually like where they work.
They're all there. They work well together. They're stable.
What do they need now? A hands-on Controller who leads the team, executes with precision, and makes sure everything runs the way it should.
That’s You!
The Company? Let Me Tell You About It.
This is a North American logistics company that moves things. Truckload. Bulk. Final mile. Warehousing and distribution. Oversized. Intermodal. Across Canada and the United States.
200+ employees. Owner-led. Fast-moving. The kind of place where no two days are the same, and that's exactly what makes it interesting. A culture that genuinely invests in its people, its community, and its future.
They've got a premium continental breakfast every morning from 8 to 9:30 and an on-site gym. Basketball, virtual golf, ping pong. An on-site nurse. Yes, onsite nurse. Free parking.
But honestly? The best thing they offer is an Accounting team that's ready to be led. They're waiting for you.
The Role, In a Nutshell.
You are the Financial backbone of this organization. Reporting to the VP of Finance, you own the accounting function end-to-end. Financial reporting. Month-end close. Internal controls. Compliance. Audit. You're the one making sure the numbers are right, the processes are tight, and the team is growing.
You'll lead a team that includes: • An AP team of 6: 2 accountants, 3 AP technicians, and a supervisor • A Senior Credit Manager who oversees 3 AR clerks
You'll work closely with the Billing Director and the Financial Analyst, who sit within the broader finance group reporting to the VP Finance. Strong collaboration is part of what makes this role work.
What You'll Actually Be Doing.
Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations • Lead all accounting operations: general ledger, AP, intercompany, fixed assets, cash management • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and working papers • Prepare financial statements for multiple legal entities, including multi-currency where applicable • Perform analytical reviews: flag the trends, the variances, the risks that leadership needs to see • Present month-end financial reporting packages to executive leadership through the VP Finance • Maintain the integrity of financial records and corporate accounting policies
Leadership & Team Development • Lead, mentor, and develop your accounting team • Set clear performance expectations and real development plans for your direct reports • Coach for both technical competency and leadership readiness • Build a scalable finance organization that can grow with the business • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning
Internal Controls, Governance & Compliance • Maintain a strong control environment - develop it, monitor it, improve it • Identify gaps and implement corrective actions that actually stick • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and government requirements • Oversee sales tax filings, remittances, regulatory reporting, and statutory obligations • Support ongoing enhancements of financial governance practices and risk management.
Audit & External Reporting • Lead all aspects of interim and annual external audits - you're the quarterback here • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners • Prepare audit schedules, documentation, and management responses • Assist in preparing audited financial statements, note disclosures, & year-end financial reporting • Make sure every deadline is met, every time, to a high standard
Financial Planning & Business Partnership • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning • Partner with department leaders to connect financial performance to operational realities • Translate numbers into insights that help people make better decisions
Cash Flow & Working Capital • Monitor cash flow, banking activities, and liquidity • Review and approve bank reconciliations and cash management processes • Support working capital initiatives: receivables, payables, cash conversion • Assist with lender reporting and banking relationship management as needed
Process Improvement & Systems • Drive continuous improvement in finance and accounting processes • Evaluate and implement efficiencies, automation opportunities, and system enhancements • Participate in ERP, accounting software, and business intelligence initiatives • Challenge what exists. Build what's needed. Scale what works.
The Person Who Will Thrive Here. You know your craft. You've led teams before, and you actually liked doing it. You're comfortable in a privately held, entrepreneurial environment. You don't need a giant public company infrastructure to do your best work. You know how to roll up your sleeves and also how to step back and see the bigger picture. You communicate well. You coach naturally. You're not afraid to flag a problem, and you bring the solution with it.
What You Need to Bring. • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field • CPA designation - required • 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience • Minimum 3 to 5 years in a Controller or Accounting Manager leadership role • Experience leading teams in a growth-oriented, entrepreneurial, or multi-entity organization • Strong knowledge of ASPE and Canadian financial reporting requirements • Solid experience managing audits, financial reporting, compliance, and internal controls • Transportation, logistics, distribution, manufacturing, or operationally intensive industry experience is a real plus • Knowledge of U.S. operations, multi-entity accounting, and state tax requirements is considered an asset
