Job Overview

We are looking for a Senior Underwriter, Commercial Aviation to join our team. This individual will play a key role in driving the company’s growth and profitability. This position requires assessing the acceptability of business opportunities in line with company guidelines, including reviewing and pricing new submissions, renewal business, and endorsements. The successful candidates will leverage their expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset to develop strong broker relationships and grow their book of business.

Our Underwriters work closely with experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, supported by an extensive product range, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to succeed. In collaboration with colleagues and management, they deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.

This is a hybrid/remote position based in Burlington, ON, but will also be open to candidates in other provinces with strong Commercial Aviation Underwriting experience.

Responsibilities

In this position you will:

Underwriting & Portfolio Growth

  • Lead the underwriting of Commercial Aviation new business and renewals, delivering competitive insurance solutions that drive portfolio growth while meeting the organization’s financial objectives and risk appetite.
  • Conduct thorough evaluation, assessment, and quoting of new business and renewal submissions.
  • Strategize ways to increase line sizes, secure further coverages and creative insurance solutions for brokers by becoming their Underwriter-of-choice for Commercial Aviation business.
  • Underwrite within delegated authority limits and rating guidelines, negotiating policy terms that are both commercially attractive and technically sound.

Broker & Stakeholder Relationships

  • Champion a broker-first approach by personally building and maintaining strong relationships with brokers and key stakeholders to support new business acquisition and retention.

Systems & Administration

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in the underwriting system, and any other systems introduced by management, ensuring data integrity that supports portfolio reporting and decision-making.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Work closely with the Claims Manager to ensure alignment between underwriting decisions and claims outcomes, supporting a consistent and informed approach to risk across the portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the underwriting team and underwriting assistants on day-to-day operations, providing guidance, oversight, and support to ensure the department functions effectively and meets its growth objectives.
  • Report into the leadership team on portfolio performance, underwriting activity, and team matters, contributing to the broader strategic direction of the organization.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel for broker meetings, conferences, and team meetings. You must have access to a safe and reliable vehicle for transportation purposes as you are required to travel for occasional meetings.
  • Must have a valid passport as more extensive travel may be required to attend team gatherings, conferences and client/broker site visits as required.

Qualifications and Characteristics

You’re a good fit if you have:

  • Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in Aviation underwriting/broking.
  • Proven high level insurance underwriting/broking experience with excellent knowledge Industry insurance policies and ability to relate policy provision to the loss exposures.
  • Registered Insurance Brokers license (or in the province you reside).
  • Exceptional customer service skills and ability to develop strong relationships.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Show initiative and create solutions to issues internally and externally with respect to workflow and personnel.
  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions independently.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Above-average computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and hands-on experience working in a paperless environment with cloud-based systems.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities, deadlines, tasks and technology.

Salary Range

The expected salary range for this position ranges from $150,000 – $170,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
