Role Description The Commercial Underwriter – Mortgage Brokerage is a full-time hybrid role based in Mississauga, ON, with flexibility for some work-from-home arrangements. In this role, the underwriter reviews and analyzes commercial mortgage applications, assesses borrower creditworthiness, and evaluates collateral, financial statements, and risk profiles in accordance with lending and insurance guidelines. The position involves preparing detailed underwriting recommendations, structuring loan terms, and collaborating with brokers, lenders, and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely decisions. The underwriter will monitor existing loan portfolios, identify potential risks, and support the development of underwriting processes that align with regulatory requirements and company standards. Day-to-day activities also include maintaining clear documentation, responding to inquiries from partners and clients, and contributing to continuous improvement of underwriting practices. Qualifications Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements and assess commercial lending risk. Proficiency in underwriting commercial mortgages, including experience with loan structuring and credit assessment. Knowledge of insurance concepts related to mortgage lending, including risk mitigation and policy interpretation. Solid understanding of finance and loans, including interest rate structures, cash flow analysis, and debt service coverage ratios. Experience in a mortgage brokerage, banking, or financial services environment is preferred. Familiarity with relevant regulatory and compliance requirements in the Canadian mortgage market. Effective written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in documentation. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid setting, managing multiple files and deadlines. Post-secondary education in finance, business, economics, or a related field; professional designations in underwriting or mortgage brokerage are an asset.
