About Us: Neighbours Community Homes is Toronto’s leading non-profit supportive housing agency with a 45-year track record of excellence. Neighbours offers permanent, affordable housing and social programs to support individuals challenged by complex mental illness and addiction, including those who are homeless or otherwise marginalized. We own 53 buildings with 1400 supportive housing units. We provide support services and/or rent subsidies to tenants in 250 units in the rental market. Neighbours Community Homes works closely with sector partners to deliver programs and advocate for solutions that will address homelessness and end the legacy of institutionalization.
About the role: The Manager, Finance, will manage and oversee the organization’s day-to-day financial operations, which include reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting and audit, ensuring that financial resources are accounted for accurately, managed responsibly, and are adequately safeguarded. Working closely with the CFO, the Manager will support the execution and implementation of tactical and strategic plans aimed at achieving Neighbours Community Homes’ (Neighbours) goals. The Manager, Finance, will directly supervise the Senior Accountant, the two Financial Analysts, and the Account Payables and Receivable Clerk. This role will provide guidance and mentorship to these direct reports, ensuring the team is adequately trained, motivated and aligned to achieving Neighbours’ goals and objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, and variance analyses. Lead monthly financial reviews with business unit leaders to analyze financial performance, explain variances, and support spending forecasts. Develop and maintain financial reporting systems and processes to meet the needs of internal stakeholders and external partners, including funders, auditors, and the Board. Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and key performance indicators, providing insights to support strategic decision-making. Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leaders and monitor financial performance against approved budgets. Develop financial forecasts and projections to support operational planning and maintain healthy cash flow. Ensure accurate accounting and reporting of all revenue sources, including grants, donations, government funding, and rental income. Oversee grant and fund management by monitoring the use of restricted and unrestricted funds and ensuring compliance with funding agreements and reporting requirements. Prepare and review financial reports required by government agencies, funders, and regulatory bodies. Coordinate and support annual audits, working closely with external auditors to ensure financial records are accurate and compliant. Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard organizational assets and ensure financial integrity. Evaluate and improve financial systems and tools to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities. Supervise and mentor finance staff, providing guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities. Collaborate with the CFO and senior leadership on financial planning, forecasting, and long-term sustainability initiatives. Support organizational projects related to financial systems, reporting improvements, and operational initiatives. Prepare ad-hoc financial analysis and reports as required and provide backup support to other members of the finance team.
What we are looking for:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. A CPA designation is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a managerial role. Strong understanding of GAAP, non-profit accounting practices, budgeting and financial reporting standards. Experience in not-for-profit accounting, particularly with low-income housing, community development, or social services organizations, is preferred. Knowledge of government funding regulations and experience with managing restricted funds, grants, and government funding is an asset.
As a condition of employment, a successful police record check for Vulnerable Sector is required. Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the country where this role is located.
