The Opportunity:
The First National Financial Residential Underwriting Division provides underwriting expertise and services to the Canadian Mortgage Broker channel.
Reporting to the Vice President, Residential Underwriting, the Assistant Vice President provides leadership to a management team in meeting the goals of the Division, including established volume targets, productivity goals, and quality standards. Residential Underwriting teams consist of Mortgage Underwriters, Associate Mortgage Underwriters and Mortgage Funders. Under the guidance and leadership of the Assistant Vice President, the Division is responsible for the assessment of mortgage applications to make sound lending decisions in adherence with the established mortgage underwriting policies and guidelines. The teams also have responsibility for reviewing required documentation for accuracy and completion and for closing and advancing funds on approved mortgage applications. Leadership Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain broker relationships and provide an exceptional service experience
- Work collaboratively with First National sales teams to ensure strong mortgage broker relationships
- Manage escalations and concerns to ensure broker loyalty and retention
- Lead and manage the branch’s underwriting activities while adhering to the underwriting guidelines
- Monitor volumes and capacity to ensure established turn-around targets are met
- Review internal and external auditing results to ensure company guidelines and procedures are properly adhered to
- Ensure adherence to policies/procedures related to AML requirements
- Implement appropriate action plans for improvements and efficiencies, where applicable.
- Analyze credit and property risk to provide lending decisions on mortgage applications at the highest risk and/or dollar value
- Review approved and rejected applications to assess risk
- Lead management meetings and departmental meetings to ensure policy and process changes are understood and implemented
- Set performance goals and conduct annual performance reviews
- Provide oversight on recruitment, compensation, and performance management activities within the department/branch
- Act on behalf of the organization with property manager for the building/facilities related to lease agreements, where applicable
- Complete special projects as assigned
Knowledge and Skills Needed:

- Strong knowledge of AML requirements
- Competent in working with basic pc software and working knowledge of the suite of Microsoft office products
Education/Certification/Experience Requirements:
- 10+ years Canadian residential mortgage experience
- Experience with Mortgage Brokerage industry, preferred
- Experience with mortgage regulatory requirements, an asset
- Holds provincial mortgage agent and/or broker license (an asset)
- Post-secondary education preferred
Working Environment and Physical Demands Analysis:
- Office environment
- Periods of high volume with tight timelines
- Prolonged periods of repetitive movement (i.e. using a keyboard and mouse)
- Long periods of time in viewing a computer screen
- Long periods of time in stationary position/sitting
- Multi-tasking may include speaking to customers on a telephone call while looking up information on a computer program
