The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Facultative Reinsurance, the Facultative Underwriter is responsible for evaluating and managing property and casualty reinsurance risks, negotiating facultative placements, and ensuring alignment with underwriting guidelines and contractual obligations. The role applies underwriting judgment to make sound reinsurance decisions and provide guidance to internal and external interested parties on underwriting standards, policy wordings and pricing. It is an underwriting role focused on complex risk evaluation, sound decision making, and balancing collaboration with independent work.

This position offers a hybrid work environment, with a primary corporate office in Cambridge and access to a satellite office in Toronto.

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Evaluate and underwrite property and casualty reinsurance risks in line with guidelines and risk appetite
  • Analyze submissions and determine appropriate terms, pricing, and placement for facultative risks
  • Negotiate and place facultative reinsurance with our members
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, contractual requirements, and internal standards
  • Apply sound judgment to assess complex risk and escalate more complicated issues when needed
  • Provide guidance on policy wording, rates, and underwriting practices to members and partners
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal teams, members, and external partners
  • Contribute to projects, process improvements, and training initiatives
  • Support junior staff through informal guidance and knowledge sharing

Your Skills and Qualifications

  • You have a bachelor’s degree or diploma in a related insurance program and/or related experience, CIP certification preferred
  • You have 5-7 years of experience in property and casualty underwriting, experience in agriculture or commercial underwriting considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain underwriting decisions and technical concepts to internal and external business partners
  • High attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in risk analysis, contract review, and documentation
  • Analytical mindset, able to interpret data, identify trends, and assess risk to support sound decisions

Salary Range

The expected base salary range for this position is $90,000 - $120,000.

The actual salary will be determined based on factors including but not limited to, market conditions, relevant experience, job related knowledge, skills, abilities, qualifications, and education.

Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs to earn additional compensation. Incentive compensation is tied to established business and individual performance targets.
