Position Title: Senior Technology Specialist, Core Systems Developer (Production Environment)
Reports To: Senior Technology Manager, Core Systems
Department: IT Group Systems
Term: Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangements: This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement and there may be some roles that are required to work in our office more than the minimum requirement.

​​The Opportunity: ​​Equitable is growing! We are looking for a Senior Technology Specialist, Core Systems Developer to join our IT Group Systems team!

We are looking a motivated, self-directing professional who recognizes opportunities to improve our process. We encourage new ideas but also look for someone who is willing to roll up their sleeves to help in every aspect of the SDLC including designing, unit testing, implementing, and maintaining complex software. As a Senior Developer you'll analyze production system problems and recommend workable solutions, but also act as an internal consultant and provide mentorship and strategic design recommendations for your peers.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead a team of developers to design and develop high-performance, scalable applications and database solutions
  • Work with other developers to create and support mobile and web applications using HTML5, CSS3, React, Angular and PWA
  • Mentor and guide team members by researching and applying best practices, standards, design patterns, and alternate approaches to coding challenges
  • Contribute business and technical expertise to the development and planning process
  • Research and recommend technologies to the team and management to help keep our tech stack up-to-date
  • Recommend and implement system designs based on long-term IT organization strategy
  • Investigate and analyze production system problems and recommend workable solutions
  • Provide on call production support
  • Document all program and system changes for ease of future support
  • As a Production Support Developer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of critical systems and software applications within Equitable

    • Manage Incidents:
      • Identify, diagnose, and find ways to resolve production issues.
      • Collaborate with other team members during incident resolution.
    • Prepare and Document Reports:
      • Maintain up-to-date documentation of systems, procedures, and other relevant information.
      • Record every problem encountered in the production environment.
    • Troubleshoot Issues:
      • Conduct root cause analysis to identify underlying issues, implement preventive measures, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
      • Analyze various metrics, logs, and debugging tools to understand the reasons behind system failures or non-performance.
      • Improve software performance by finding effective solutions.
    • Contribute to Product Development:
      • Participate in all phases of product development, including designing, building, and testing.
      • Create valuable tools, such as internal software, to automate processes or platforms for customer inquiries and reviews.
    • Cross-functional collaboration with developers, system administrators and software engineers to solve production issues.


What you will bring:


  • ​​A strong technical background with high proficiency in Visual Basic 6, .Net 4.8 and CORE, C#, and Windows Forms with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • A solid knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, Transact SQL, ADO.NET and Entity Framework with at least 5 years of relevant experience; SSRS, SSIS (assets)
  • A working knowledge of API development including RESTful services and tools such as Postman and Swagger
  • A working knowledge of technologies like LINQ, Regex, JSON, XML, XSD, SOAP, and WSDL
  • Hands on experience using testing frameworks with priority on MSTest
  • Experience with cloud platforms like Azure
  • Experience with CI/CD like Azure DevOps
  • Working knowledge of source control like TFS and GIT
  • Experience working as part of an agile team (an asset)
  • Experience with Office products (Word, Excel, Visio)
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Degree or diploma in Computer Science or a related field
  • General knowledge of insurance industry (an asset)
