Job Description

The Analyst, Accounting & Treasury will report directly to Senior Manager, Accounting / Controller and be closely supported by the Treasury Team Lead. The Analyst will be responsible for completing several period close accounting related functions, treasury related functions and special projects. The Analyst will work in various areas requiring cross functional collaboration across the organization.

KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS

  • Meet all period deadlines within the department necessary to facilitate accurate period end close
  • Provide timely response and feedback to internal queries for information and/or assistance
  • Policy and practice adherence while also ensuring IFRS compliance
  • Satisfaction of all business partners in team outputs (finance, procurement, receiving, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills to finance management discussing challenges, opportunities, risks, and milestones

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Functional

  • Evaluating historical and current financial data to understand a company's financial conditions, with a primary focus on the balance sheet, while supporting the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) team on the Profit & Loss (P&L) analysis
  • Prepare journal entries with sufficient supporting documentation and rationale for period close
  • In-depth completion of account reconciliations, understanding the balances and investigating unreconciled items for timely resolution
  • Streamlining internal procedures, identify and implement automation where possible
  • Collaborating with business partners to assess and enhance business processes
  • Studying industry-specific business trends and research data.
  • Provide reporting, backup and ad hoc requests for external and internal auditors
  • Financing reporting requirements to be completed monthly and quarterly
  • Guiding businesses and individuals in making informed investment decisions.
  • Assessing financial data, identifying economic trends, and exploring potential investments.
  • Support the Treasury lead to regularly update the cash flow forecast and manage weekly payments cash flow
  • Corporate Card administrator for the organization. This includes managing the application process, monitoring cards to be cancelled, and ensuring all receipts and reports are reconciled and submit timely.
  • Concur Expense administrator for the organization. This includes managing out of pocket expenses, reviewing for policy compliance, and determine required accrual for period close.
  • Work closely with the AP team to process weekly payments both electronically and by manual cheque
  • Administer all bank transactions and oversee data recording, including clearing cheques, addressing exceptions, coordinating discrepancies with stores, etc.
  • Maintain relationship with bank and service providers
  • Opportunity to be involved in supporting transactions, processes and preparation of financial statements for the Love Of Reading charitable foundation under Indigo
  • Support treasury initiatives to evaluate and optimize banking structure, functionality and payment methods set up in ERP to streamline the process
  • Review and support the improve of policies related to Treasury such as Corporate Cards and Travel & Expense working directly with the Procurement, Legal and HR teams
  • Generate financial analysis and insights to support business cases or post evaluations of initiatives
  • Assist in developing and implementing opportunities to improve and streamline business processes
  • Ad-hoc requests and projects as assigned
  • Act as an advocate for the customer by placing them at the forefront of all design and decision-making processes
  • Proactively identify and anticipate customer expectations and needs
  • Embrace and seek out technology that creates automated solutions to improve efficiency and data integrity
  • Challenge the status quo by consistently identifying areas for improvement, diagnosing issues, and working to resolve them

Qualifications

Work Experience / Education / Certifications

  • Post-secondary education in Commerce, Finance, Business or Accounting, or equivalent
  • CPA designation or close to obtaining is an asset
  • 2-3 years of experience in a similar role

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload to meet deadlines, multi-task, and complete projects on time
  • Strong thought leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Exposure to the areas of financial analysis, budgeting/forecasting, variance analysis

  • Driven and takes the initiative to do in-depth reviews of data and understanding of business processes
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets, databases and financial software applications
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs, including SharePoint
  • SAP experience is an asset
  • Exposure to the areas of financial analysis, budgeting/forecasting, variance analysis
