Working Business Language: English. This role is considered a head-office role and will be required to communicate with internal and external stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language for this role is English. As such, the successful candidate must be fully proficient in English.

Salary: At Wawanesa, salary is only one component of a holistic, comprehensive and competitive offering that we provide to our employees. The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including but not limited to: your work location, local labour market conditions, external market salary data, internal pay equity and the knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary offered is estimated to be within the following range: $70,000 - $90,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply.

Job Overview

Working under minimal supervision, this job contributes to Wawanesa's success by ensuring the efficient and smooth operation of the accounting department.

Job Responsibilities

  • Daily supervision of the Senior Accounting Assistants and Accounting Assistants
  • Training of new employees
  • On-going evaluation and control of employee performance
  • Manage problems and exceptional situations as it relates to accounting functions and staff
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new procedures, including identification of areas for improvement
  • Interact with all departments and brokers on accounting-related concerns
  • Approval and review of all monthly ledger reports, semi- annual reports and year-end reports
  • Development, management and reporting on Internal Controls
  • Assistance to Broker Reconciliation team as required
  • Assist in the preparation of the budget and budget variance reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years of accounting experience
  • Completed post-secondary (college or university, preferably with Accounting focus; years of experience may substitute for education)
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office (specifically Word and Excel)
  • Effective team player with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to lead others effectively (Supervisor experience preferred)
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of effective communication and listening skills
  • Demonstrates attention to detail by performing self-review
