Position Summary


The Senior Director Investment Finance leads the back-office management of MEDA's impact investments and funds across its entire portfolio. The Director will manage, evaluate, execute, and report on MEDA's current investment portfolio as well as review and analyze investment opportunities to ensure they align with MEDA's impact goals, strategic plan and the regulatory environment(s). The position will support the structuring of new investment vehicles as required.

The Director will be an integral part of the Finance, Information Technology Services & Legal team and will report to MEDA's Chief Financial and Investment Officer.

  • Location: Hybrid/Remote within Canada or US, ideally within proximity to a MEDA office
  • Salary Range:
    • Canadian-based employees: $116,400 - 142,250 (CAD)
    • US-based employees: $122,220 - 149,363 (USD)

RESPONSIBILITIES


Investment Strategy and Policy

  • Support the development of MEDA's Impact investment strategy and the Investment Policy (IP) for the MEDA Risk Capital Fund (MRCF) and in addition, support the development of investment policies of program investments.
  • Lead the implementation of the IP through reporting and analysis to the Investment Committee to assist in decision-making.


Portfolio Management and Investment Leadership

  • Accountable to ensure MEDA has a robust investment risk and control processes and decision framework.
  • Provide oversight of investment requests, evaluating opportunities, providing recommendations, and ensuring appropriate approvals received up to the investment committee.
  • Based on the parameters set by the investment committee, negotiate terms of potential investments on behalf of MEDA, ensuring approval for variances in the parameters.
  • Oversee due diligence ensuring rigour in analysis is given to all investment requests.
  • Oversee allocation of assets, identifying restructuring or exit opportunities and lead in negotiating exits.
  • Source strategic support for MEDA's investment portfolio as required, managing any external consultants & contracts.


Reporting

  • Oversee the creation of fact sheets, quarterly and annual Fund reports & periodic portfolio updates including financial and impact returns.
  • Respond to requests for financial and impact analysis of investee financial statements on a as-needed basis.


Regulatory, Risk and Compliance

  • Provide risk management reporting for investments.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance with applicable regime (SEC, state and/or federal);
  • Coordinate with Finance, Fund Administrators, and Compliance Officer on Funds´ Compliance and serve as Funds´ liaison for relevant officials, lawyers and other advisors.
  • Ensure compliance with conditions set by investment committee prior to deployment of funds.
  • Ensure compliance with Funds and portfolio companies´ documents.
  • Develop and implement Funds´ policies and procedures (e.g. conflicts of interest), including investment templates


Audit and Administration

  • Oversee the administrative requirements of board representatives, including letter of appointment/expectations and reporting requirements.
  • Support the organization of investment committee meetings.
  • Review accounting treatment of investments to ensure reporting is accurate.
  • Collaborating with Corporate Finance, assess investment impairments and prepare required documentation of impairments for auditors and board committees.


REQUIREMENTS


Education: Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation required. Exceptional candidates with a business, economics, or finance background will be considered; investment and risk management designations are an asset.


Experience: 7-10 years of combined work experience in development banking or impact investing preferred.


Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in emerging markets and social businesses, investment management, private equity, investment banking, consulting, or a socially focused enterprise.
  • Leadership level experience in finance, accounting and/or impact investment management.
  • Familiarity with offering documents for private and public investment offerings and ability to efficiently evaluate the merits of funds and direct investments across diverse asset classes and end markets
  • Strong and effective communication skills, willingness to engage with all stakeholders
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate efforts across the team, including managing other analysts or consultants
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, own and deliver projects independently with some guidance from senior team members
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, able to thrive in a dynamic environment with many moving parts, and able to both focus on both the detail and the bigger picture
  • Experience with multiple business models, financial modelling, due diligence processes, technology trends
  • Experience in impact measurement for social or impact investments
  • MS Excel and PowerPoint skills required and familiarity with MS Teams preferred
  • Strong passion for impact investing and impact management and high interest and capabilities in building a network of contacts in the impact investing ecosystem
