Job Description

Based in Vancouver, the Investment Accountant is responsible for timely, complete, and accurate accounting, valuation, and financial reporting of Real Estate Debt investments. The Investment Accountant works directly with the Real Estate Debt Operations, Legal, the Valuations Department, Corporate Accounting, and Taxation teams to complete daily investment transactions and periodic financial reporting tasks for various stakeholders. The Investment Accountant is also responsible for the preparation of investment performance information, such as investment return and valuation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Records and ensures completeness and accuracy of daily investment transactions and activities.
  • Performs monthly closing procedures, such as bank reconciliations, preparation of month-end accruals, and amortizations, etc.
  • Assists with preparation of quarterly valuation summaries and reporting packages, coordinating with the Valuation team on the quarterly and annual valuation process.
  • Participates in quarterly and annual financial statements, including financial statement disclosures (and working paper files), in accordance with policies and established standards, for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Responds to and supports inquiries from cross-functional departments, clients, and auditors.
  • Involved with monthly and annual income allocation and distribution for limited partnerships, trusts, and pooled investment portfolios.
  • Prepares quarterly return calculations and analysis to support management reporting.
  • Reviews legal documents to verify that investments have been set up correctly in the accounting system and that complex transactions are accurately recorded.
  • Works on special projects related to financial reporting and streamlining processes for operational efficiency.
  • Maintains financial controls and procedures to ensure all aspects of accounting, valuation, and reporting meet established policies.
  • Recommends changes to controls where weaknesses are identified and ensures adherence to internal controls for assigned functions.
  • Provides training and assistance to other staff members as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline
  • Currently pursuing or recently obtained CPA designation
  • 2-3 years of accounting experience with a focus on financial reporting
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, industry-standard valuation techniques, and IFRS Reporting Standards, with the ability to apply knowledge to investment funds
  • Experience in mortgage/real estate debt investments and investment accounting is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate key themes and messages to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities and organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and self-review, and the ability to prioritize workload priorities
  • Advanced working knowledge of Excel, Word, and the Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Experience with Yardi ERP is an asset

The expected annualized base salary range for this role is $70,000 to $75,000.

The actual salary offered will take into consideration a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the individual's skill, experience, education and training, the market compensation of the role, and the consideration to internal equity.
