Cenovus has an opportunity in a dynamic and stimulating professional environment for a tax lawyer.

The mandate of the Cenovus tax team is to maximize value through effective tax accounting, compliance and planning activities while complying with the applicable legislation

As part of the Tax Planning and International group, the successful candidate will be a key member of project teams providing tax advice and practical solutions to the business. The Tax Lawyer will be accountable for monitoring legislative and case law developments, researching complex tax issues and developing tax planning strategies. This role will collaborate cross-functionally to mitigate and actively manage the Company's tax risk while aligning to the Tax team's priorities and the Company's overall strategy.

What you'll do:

  • Research and prepare tax analyses for tax planning projects and business issues.

  • Provide advice on tax efficient ways to structure transactions.

  • Review agreements and draft tax provisions.

  • Prepare technical analyses to support tax treatments in tax provision and tax returns.

  • Prepare technical submissions in response to audit queries as well as supporting the Audit and Litigation team beyond the audit stage of CRA interaction.

  • Monitor tax legislative and case law developments to provide analysis of changes in tax legislation impacting Cenovus.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • University degree in law.

  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian tax legislation.

  • Minimum of 6 years direct experience in Canadian corporate tax.

  • Exceptional research, analytical, and writing skills.

  • Experience with the Canada Revenue Agency, including appeal and litigation support would be asset but not essential.

  • Strong interpersonal skills including positive, enthusiastic and team oriented.

  • Excellent verbal and presentation communication skills.

  • Self-starter with critical thinking skills, detail oriented and well organized.

  • Strong work ethic and ability to work within tight deadlines on multiple, varied deliverables.
