Summary
Reporting to the Manager Tax, the Commodity Tax Specialist will apply their in-depth knowledge on all matters related to indirect tax including compliance, research, planning, forecasting, and accounting for related tax liabilities. The Commodity Tax Specialist will work closely with members of the operations, commercial, trading, and finance teams. This position requires a qualified professional who is considered an expert in commodity tax.

Accountabilities

  • Prepare and file Canadian and US state indirect tax returns and related schedules, elections, refunds, and other filings, making efficient use of tax software where applicable.
  • Consults with and advises on all matters related to commodity tax compliance, planning, and dispute resolution across the Company’s businesses in Canada and the U.S.
  • As the indirect tax expert, compiles memos, working papers, and reconciliations, ensuring each file is adequately supported and maintained in compliance with legislative requirements and internal protocol.
  • Work independently on complex commodity tax issues and prepares balanced recommendations, escalating complex issues if required.
  • Update, review, and/or reconcile monthly indirect tax accounts prior to inclusion in consolidated financial reporting.
  • Access ERP systems (including Microsoft D365), to extract records and reports, interpret data, and perform routine and ad-hoc analyses.
  • Assemble documentation requested by taxation authorities, including the preparation of responses to external auditor queries.
  • Prepare technical research and provide advice on a variety of indirect tax issues.
  • Assess the impact of new and emerging indirect tax legislation.
  • Maintain tax exemption certificates for all business activities.
  • Develop, apply, and maintain ERP tax logic for existing systems and new implementations.
  • Acts as the senior commodity tax resource by providing guidance, coaching, mentoring to less experienced staff, escalating more complex issues to the Manager Tax.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications – Related Education, Experience & Skills

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma and/or equivalent years of related experience.
  • 7 – 10 years of in-depth experience in a commodity tax role in a for-profit enterprise, a public accounting firm, or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in the preparation and completion of Canadian and US indirect tax returns is required.
  • CPA Canada In-depth GST Course would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in a public company setting would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in regulatory, property assessment, and/or tax would be considered an asset.
  • Must keep up-to-date on changes to commodity tax regulations and legislation.
  • Strong computer and technical skills including Microsoft Office Applications, TaxPrep, and accounting systems, including Microsoft Dynamics AX and D365; Advanced Microsoft Excel and analytical skills preferred.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain complex commodity tax issues to all levels of the business and external advisors.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with key business stakeholders.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, both verbally and in written form.
  • Self-motivated, energetic team player, able to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives.
  • Ability to complete assignments on time and in a manner fully acceptable to the individual(s) requesting same.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail in the performance of duties.

Working Conditions

  • The majority of the work is performed in an office environment.
  • This position requires the ability to work in-person from our Calgary head office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
