The Opportunity

Our Commercial Marketing Analytics Team is growing to help support the growth of our non-regulated affiliate Natural Gas, Power and Emissions marketing and trading business, and we are currently looking to add an #energyproblemsolver as an Analyst, Quantitative Energy, based in Calgary, AB; Toronto, ON or Houston, TX.

Reporting to the Director, Portfolio, Structuring and Long Term Analytics, this position is part of the team responsible for fundamental, quantitative, and valuations support of the trading and origination groups and information support for the risk and finance teams. This integral team member will convey that work into tangible reports, analyses, and recommendations for the commercial and trading teams.

What you’ll do

  • Build and maintain quantitative pricing and risk management models for power and natural gas products
  • Act as the in-house expert in understanding and quantifying the risk around our portfolio of physical and financial positions, customer obligations and other commercial arrangements
  • Validate trade terms, prices, and positions, model and report risk metrics, such as mark to market (MtM), profit and loss (P&L), earnings at risk (EaR), and other volumetric measures of asset portfolios and trading positions
  • Collaborate with the commodity desks to develop hedging strategies by analyzing position reports and forward curve dynamics
  • Work collaboratively with the Power and Gas trading desks to provide superior, real-time analytics to quantify opportunities and risks
  • Identify the risks of new transactions and their impact on the existing risk profile and gross margin of the portfolio
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others in the organization including Trading, IT, and Market Risk personnel to ensure proper implementation of models

Minimum Qualifications

  • University degree in statistics, math, finance, commerce, economics
  • 6 years of related experience
  • 3 years of solid analytical work experience in quantitative energy analysis in North American electricity or natural gas markets
  • Understanding of energy trading and pricing mechanisms, including forward curves, financial instruments, basis calculations and hedging strategies
  • Robust knowledge of statistics, time series analysis, financial mathematics, and hands-on experience with price forecasting models
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (experience with Power Query is an asset) and SQL
  • Strong coding experience using one or more scientific programming languages such as Python or R
  • Proficiency in report building and data visualization tools: Power BI, Tableau, R, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Math, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, or related field
  • Familiarity with energy trading and risk management (ETRM) systems, such as Endur
  • Experience with optimization tools and techniques (e.g. linear programming, quadratic programming, dynamic programming, heuristics, data science etc.)
  • Understanding of complex power transactions such as Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), carbon and renewable energy credits, power retail pricing, capacity and toll pricing, options, and energy asset management agreements
