Job summary

We are hiring a Controller for a growing, venture-backed technology company. This is a hands-on mandate. You will own the accounting function end to end, reporting directly to the CFO on a small finance team. If you want real autonomy over how a function runs and you like being close to the numbers, this will suit you. What you will own Close and reporting Full ownership of the month, quarter and year end close, including the close calendar and cut-off discipline Journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferrals and balance sheet reconciliations Monthly financial statements and management reporting packages Variance analysis and commentary that leadership can act on Support to the CFO on budgets, forecasts and cash flow reporting Audit, tax and compliance Year end working papers and management of the external audit as the primary point of contact Technical accounting research and memos on judgement areas such as revenue recognition, leases and capitalization Sales tax, payroll and corporate tax compliance and remittances Design and documentation of internal controls appropriate to the company's stage Transactional and payroll Oversight of AP and AR, including collections follow up and vendor management Payroll processing and reconciliation, and the related benefits and remittance work Bank and credit card reconciliations, treasury and cash positioning Systems and process Ownership of the accounting system and the integrations feeding it Identifying where manual work can be automated, and then implementing it Documenting processes that currently live in someone's head Building the reporting infrastructure the company will need at two or three times its current size What success looks like In 90 days you have run a clean close on your own and know where the risk sits in the balance sheet In six months the close is faster and better documented than when you arrived In twelve months the audit runs smoothly, the controls are documented, and the CFO has stopped worrying about accounting What we are looking for CPA designation 8+ years of progressive accounting experience Time inside a smaller, fast-growing or venture-backed company, where you were close to the work Strong technical fundamentals and the judgement to apply them without a large team around you Genuine comfort with imperfect systems, incomplete processes and a degree of ambiguity A bias toward fixing things rather than escalating them Nice to have, not required Experience as an early finance hire in a company Exposure to multi-currency or cross border operations Public accounting training early in your career Experience implementing or migrating an accounting system Comfort with reporting and automation tools beyond Excel The details Fully remote within Canada $150,000 to $170,000 base, with flexibility for the right person Discretionary bonus Market competitive benefits plan including a Health Spending Account How to apply Apply through this posting or send your resume to [email protected] to be considered. Requirements

Candidates must have a CPA designation and over 8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within fast-growing or venture-backed companies. Strong technical fundamentals and the ability to operate autonomously in ambiguous environments are required.
