Original job posting

Established nearly two centuries ago, FM is a leading mutual insurance company whose capital, scientific research capability and engineering expertise are solely dedicated to property risk management and the resilience of its policyholder-owners. These owners, who share in the belief that the majority of property loss is preventable, represent many of the world’s largest organizations, including one out of every four Fortune 500 companies. They work with FM to better understand the hazards that can negatively impact their business operations, make cost-effective risk management decisions, combine property loss prevention with insurance protection, and ultimately achieve greater resilience. The Canada Operations Client Service Team has an immediate opportunity for an ambitious, intellectually curious, and business-minded Underwriter seeking to build a career in property insurance underwriting, based in our Vancouver office. In this position, the successful candidate is responsible for developing underwriting, relationship management, and risk assessment knowledge while supporting Account Managers, primarily on underwriting matters. Individuals in this role will complete underwriting training and professional development activities to build technical knowledge, business acumen, and client relationship skills as outlined in a specific development plan. It is expected that someone in this position will develop the skills, experience, and knowledge to achieve standard binding authority and transition into the Underwriter II role. RESPONSIBILITIES Support Account Managers in the execution of underwriting activities, including submission and values review, coverage evaluation, analysis of terms and conditions, rating and pricing, and capacity allocation. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of FM underwriting guidelines, policy forms, pricing methodologies, profitability analysis, and portfolio management principles. Assist in the design and analysis of insurance programs, gaining an understanding of FM's underwriting capacity, reinsurance structures, placement practices, and approvals processes. Prepare and review insurance documentation, including policies, binders, endorsements, and certificates, ensuring accuracy, contract certainty, and compliance with company standards. Learn and apply loss prevention and risk assessment concepts by reviewing risk reports and engineering information to identify exposures and support underwriting decisions. Build an understanding of clients' business operations, plans, and goals to support the development of effective client service strategies. Support client servicing activities by preparing presentations, proposals, and other meeting materials while developing effective communication and presentation skills. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Client Service, Claims, Operations, and Reinsurance, to support account management and underwriting objectives. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. CIP, CRM, ARM, or progress toward a professional insurance designation is an asset. 2+ years of experience in insurance, risk management, client service, operations, engineering, or financial services preferred. Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills with a high level of attention to detail. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, with the ability to analyze data, create presentations, and prepare professional business communications. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders. Basic proficiency in the areas of Account Management, Business Communication, Exposure Analysis, Negotiation, Presentation Skills, Program Structure and Linesetting, and Relationship Management. Intermediate proficiency in the areas of Interpersonal Skills, Planning and Organizing, Policy Terms and Conditions, Profitability Analysis and Pricing, and Underwriting Guidelines. Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts, manage multiple priorities, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment. The final salary offer will vary based on individual education, skills, and experience. The position is eligible to participate in FM’s comprehensive Total Rewards program that includes an incentive plan, generous health and well-being programs, defined contribution pension and savings plan, career development opportunities, tuition reimbursement, time off allowances and much more. FM is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse workforce.
