Specific accountabilities

In order to promote a strategic approach and foster high-quality governance, Ivanhoé Cambridge has positioned the Risk Management function to report directly to the President and CEO. A strong leader with a global vision and cutting-edge expertise in investments, real estate transactions and capital markets is therefore being sought to take on the role of Vice President and Chief Risk Officer. The successful candidate will play a key part in optimizing risk management efficiency and performance as it pertains to investment processes and business management practices.

The incumbent must ensure that the Risk Management function adds as much value as possible for the organization, in addition to fulfilling its primary governance duties. The incumbent advises and influences senior management and the business units, providing support and guidance on strategic priorities for the portfolio, its investments and corporate operations (financial and extra-financial risks). He or she leads a multidisciplinary, decentralized team of experts in the field who work upstream of and in partnership with the Company's various departments.

As Chief Risk Officer, the incumbent serves on Ivanhoé Cambridge's steering committees and internal investment committee as well as the audit committees and investment committee for the Ivanhoé Cambridge Board of Directors. Working closely with the business units, he or she generates reports on real estate transactions (acquisitions, dispositions and developments) at the national and international levels, addressing transactional and operational portfolio risks (financial and extra-financial risks).

Lastly, the incumbent serves as an ambassador for the Company, securing buy-in from all stakeholders with regard to a culture of sound and robust risk management in order to preserve capital and enhance the Company's resilience.

Specific duties:

  • Lead a Risk Management team that is integral to business processes and to achieving Ivanhoé Cambridge's overarching goals;
  • Help develop the Risk Management team's role as a network of risk experts supporting the business units; create a single, multipurpose centre of risk expertise with in-depth knowledge of financial and extra-financial risks;
  • Contribute to setting the strategic priorities for risk management and play a key part in embedding a risk management culture;
  • Serve as representative for the Risk Management Department to the business units and the various decision-making bodies (investment committees, valuation committees, etc.) on all matters involving risk management;
  • Influence business units by providing enhanced support for the portfolio and its investments as well as transactions and operations (strategic, financial and extra-financial risks);
  • Establish and maintain a healthy dialogue with the business units and identify as best as possible the risks associated with these groups, including those related to strategic partnerships;
  • Issue risk management–related reports and recommendations, highlighting current and emerging risks with the goal of strengthening Ivanhoé Cambridge's investment strategies; present findings and conclusions to the investment committees and decision-making bodies of Ivanhoé Cambridge and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec;
  • Ensure that guidelines are established and processes followed in analyzing major risks to the Ivanhoé Cambridge portfolio and the Company itself, including strategy and investment transaction risks as well as financial and extra-financial risks (counterparties, liquidities, undisbursed commitments, compliance leverage, funds and financing); recommend mitigation measures for these risks;
  • Recommend actions or strategies to optimize the risk/return ratio;
  • Establish risk management processes and practices and oversee implementation; ensure they are widely known and adhered to;
  • Encourage and lead collaboration and work with business units and other groups to develop the required tools and instruments for the investment group;
  • Serve as expert risk advisor for the Real Estate portfolio (PS710) on behalf of the Risk Management team at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.

Key requirements

  • Graduate degree in finance or equivalent academic credentials;
  • Fifteen to twenty years of leadership experience with a notable track record in team management and strategic departmental management in the financial and real estate sectors, preferably in investment, valuation and/or risk management;
  • In-depth knowledge of capital market and portfolio risk concepts;
  • Working knowledge of real estate or commercial real estate financing and related risks;
  • Direct experience in transactions;
  • CFA or FRM designation, an asset;
  • Solid understanding of the mathematical and financial concepts associated with portfolio and risk management;
  • Strong people skills and ability to form relationships based on trust;
  • Ability to make decisions in a fast-changing environment;
  • Leadership experience in a context of large-scale, complex transactional growth across borders, requiring significant financial engineering in capital markets;
  • Experience handling major, highly complex financial transactions (structure, financial derivatives, alternative corporate governance, etc.);
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, as an individual and as a team, as evidenced by his or her astute questioning of the status quo, openness to new ideas and determination to find creative and innovative solutions;
  • International expertise, both technical and practical; considerable skill at working with partners from other cultural backgrounds;
  • Humility, impeccable integrity and reputation in terms of governance and business ethics;
  • Strong analytical and processing skills; ability to produce recommendations and convey them clearly, effectively and concisely;
  • Composure, self-assurance and sense of urgency necessary to succeed in a world-class transaction-based environment;
  • Proven aptitude for technological market tools and comfort in a computerized environment featuring artificial intelligence and automation;
  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English.
