Leads and oversees the development and execution of Wealth Management’s Asian Client Strategy across Canada and Asia ensuring business strategies, staffing plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. This individual is a subject matter expert on the Asian market, with a deep understanding of key clients, the strategies of other financial institutions operations in the space, and Bankers who specialize in this segment. While this role resides in Private Banking, the National Director leads the Asian Client Strategy across all Global Wealth Management (GWM) business lines.

  • Leads and builds Wealth Management’s Asian client segment strategy by developing and leading the implementation of long- and short-term strategies, policies and programs. Initially focused on Chinese/Hong Kong client segments with subsequent expansion to other Southeast Asian countries
  • Builds and maintains strategic relationships with domestic and offshore entities and Centers of Influence (COI) to drive business growth opportunities including marketing, sponsorships, partnerships, referral arrangements etc.
  • Leads cross functional project teams to improve and broaden KYC, AML and other Compliance frameworks to meet Asian client needs. Establishes mandate and sets agendas for Asian client oversight committee as committee Chair.
  • Actively supports business development by Asian client-focused Wealth Management teams to increase market share through open communication and networking with relevant stakeholders (e.g., McLeod advisors, PIC counsellors, Private Bankers, Compliance, EDDU etc.)
  • Understands competitive landscape and best practices in catering to the unique client segment
  • Remains abreast of competitor positions and changing market influences
  • Leads the development of a comprehensive Wealth offering to meet the unique needs of Asian HNW / UHNW clients. Structures and designs client-focused solutions to meet their needs and to effectively address the changing demands of the highly competitive marketplace.
  • Measures and tracks Asian HNW / UHNW client profitability; develops pricing strategies to maximize opportunities
  • Expert knowledge of the Banks’ credit and operational risk appetite including regulatory and compliance (e.g., AML, Source of Wealth; Source of Funds; Funds movement; Currency restrictions)
  • Understands how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge
  • Creates an environment in which their team pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk
  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team

Education / Experience

• University Degree/College Diploma in business or relevant work experience (ideally 10+ years of working experience in Wealth Management)
• Expert knowledge of Asian Markets, including country and cultural awareness
• Expert knowledge of Asian culture and traditions
• Thorough knowledge of Private Banking services and lending expertise with a good understanding of all Wealth Business Lines
• Superior communication and sales skills – both written and verbal
• Extensive business development experience in Canada and internationally
• Fluency in Cantonese and/or Mandarin (verbal and written)
• Close ties to the Asian community in Canada
• Proficient in using MS Office suite
• Strong talent scout
