Covanta Durham York Renewable Energy Limited Partnership (“Covanta”) is currently seeking a VP Transformation- Strategic Initiatives and Operation to serve as a leader and trusted advisor to the EVP, Chief Transformation Officer of Covanta, working with the CTO, CEO and ELT to operationalize the transformation and to define projects and programs in alignment with the company’s strategic goals.

This role will enable the successful achievement of core objectives in the Covanta Strategic Plan as defined by the Transformation and Full Potential Plan (FPP). It will ensure alignment of strategic and operational priorities and support enterprise-wide transformation initiatives focused on growing and expanding the capabilities for the organization that enable Covanta to become a market leader in sustainable waste solutions.

The successful candidate will be a resourceful, highly motivated problem solver with strong emotional intelligence, critical thinking skills and executive presence with a strong and proven background in finance and transformation. This position will report to the EVP, Chief Transformation Officer and will work collaboratively with leaders across the businesses.

Main Job Duties:

  • Leads and manages the transformation plan and associated financial objectives across the enterprise
  • Leads and manages all regional operations through KPI Leadership and management and drive organization to meet the long-term financial goals.
  • Leads, develops, manages, and oversees strategic and highly visible project initiatives defined by the transformation office.
  • Serves as a change agent in driving business transformation, FPP operationalization at a regional level
  • Serves in a leadership capacity as a planner and facilitator responsible for supporting the needs of the CEO/CTO and the ELT in achieving the goals defined in the FPP with specific focus on the annual priorities set by the CEO.
  • Helps develop and execute a change management plan and drive operational improvement across the organization
  • Leads and develops opportunities of business cost optimization to ensure we meet our financial objectives of the FPP
  • Drive Business operational excellence model – leveraging lean principle – such as KPI, Hoshin Kanri, kaizen
  • Identify and execute opportunities for cost optimization
  • Works collaboratively with members of the ELT and their teams to ensure that the strategic priorities and key business decisions are properly resourced.
  • Coordinates the completion of projects that the CTO team is directly accountable for managing or supporting.
  • Provides independent leadership of designated projects by convening key stake holders, collaborating with critical partners, and communicating project goals and progress
  • Assembles and manages a highly skilled team of internal consultants who are experienced project managers, engineers, analysts, planners, change agents and facilitators to define current state, future state and overall change management for defined initiatives.
  • Leads large cross-functional transformation programs and provides subject matter expertise and industry best practices related to business and operational transformation.
  • Ensures the coordination and implementation of change management, project management and industry experience that is relevant to the business goals and objectives of Covanta.
  • Works across the enterprise to identify opportunities to enhance coordination, standardization, and centralization of business processes and resources and then works with leadership to develop the business case, change management plans, and implementation strategy.
  •  Supports the work of the Chief Transformation Officer required to continue driving key strategic priorities forward and assist the CEO and ELT as needed on projects and initiatives aimed at transforming the system.
  • Serves as an ambassador internally and externally advancing Covanta’s goals and brand.

Role requirements

Education:                 At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Business, Finance or other related field. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:               A minimum of ten (10) years of leadership experience in financial roles with strong operational expertise.

Demonstrated experience collaborating and partnering with stakeholders and leaders at a variety of levels and in heavily matrixed organizations. Proven experience improving profitability and reducing cost by optimizing operational capabilities

Strong financial background In an Operational CFO role with experience in managing regions

Expertise in Lean principles – i.e. Hoshin Kanri, KPI leadership, and Kaizen

Prior experience on transformation and demonstrated capabilities to successful execute transformation for a large cooperation

Strong demonstrated capabilities in financial operations roles

Prior experience in leadership programs that demonstrate fast problem solving expertise, such as GE Corporate Audit Staff.

Excellent Relationship and Matrix Management

  • Must be able to manage across matrix teams exceptionally well and augment or compliment the skill set of the CTO to ensure full team effectiveness.
  • Ability to manage complex relationships, build trust, resolve conflict, and drive results while providing significant value to operational partnerships.
  • Comfortable developing a network of industry and out of industry experts in order to research and utilize innovations and best practices from other industries.

Talent Development & Resource Management

  • Ability to recruit and retain highly skilled team
  • Experience managing the allocation of resources, including internal and external consultant rationalization.
  • Leads or assigns resources for the planning and execution of transformation initiatives including the identification and training of ad hoc resources.
  • Knows how to draw and develop talent from across the organization and assign the right resources to maximize project outcomes and minimize project cost.
  • Builds and maintains employee engagement and motivation; fosters a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Ability to develop transformation and business acumen throughout the organization.
