Job Description

Reporting to the Controller, Mortgage Accounting, the Senior Investment Accountant will be heavily involved in the onboarding and management of the ICBC segregated mortgage portfolio and is responsible for timely, complete and accurate accounting, valuation and financial reporting of the mortgage investments. This position will be located in QuadReal’s Vancouver office, the candidate may start in Toronto office but will need to be willing to relocate to Vancouver.

The Senior Investment Accountant works directly with the Mortgage Operations, Legal, Valuations, Corporate Accounting and Taxation to establish investment structures, record restructurings in the investment accounting system and ensure that complex investment transactions are accounted for in accordance with supporting documentation. The Senior Investment Accountant is also responsible for the valuation of the mortgage investments and their holding structures.

The Senior Investment Accountant works in a team environment and assists staff in cross functional departments with accounting treatment, problem resolution, decisions or recommendations where appropriate. This position is responsible for performing a number of non-pooled investment portfolio functions, assisting on special projects and maintaining internal controls.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings to assist with the onboarding of the ICBC segregated portfolio and provides input on operational considerations
  • Reviews accounting records to verify that opening balances have been correctly set up in the system and agree to the ICBC records
  • Records and ensure completeness and accuracy of daily investment transactions and activities
  • Completes, with precision, monthly and quarterly management reporting in a timely and accurate manner
  • Verifies unit pricing for assigned pooled funds and segregated holdings at each month end within deadlines
  • Reviews and prepares quarterly valuations of the mortgage investments and coordinates with internal and external valuators on the valuation process
  • Maintains financial controls and procedures to ensure all aspects of accounting, valuation and reporting meet established policies, and recommends changes to controls where weaknesses are identified
  • Responds to and supports inquiries from cross functional departments, BCI, clients and auditors
  • Assists with year-end pooled investment portfolios and holding entity financial statements, including note disclosure in accordance with policies and established standards
  • Participates in interdepartmental meetings prior to acquisition of new investments or restructurings and provides input on operational considerations
  • Reviews legal documents to verify that investments have been set up in the accounting system correctly and that complex transactions are accurately recorded
  • Works on special projects relating to streamlining processes for operational efficiency
  • Provides training and assistance to other staff members as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or related discipline
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA; CPA, CGA; CPA, CMA)
  • Three to five years accounting experience in a senior accounting capacity, preferably in industry
  • Strong experience in investment accounting environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, industry standard valuation techniques and IFRS Reporting Standards and ability to apply knowledge to the Mortgage portfolio
  • Experience leading and reviewing junior staff contributions ensuring accurate and complete monthly and quarterly deliverables
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to articulate key themes and messages both with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities and organizational skills, strong attention to detail and self-review and ability to prioritize workload
  • Experience in accounting and financial reporting for complex investment structures
  • Up to date knowledge of changes in the investment industry and accounting and reporting practices for new investment instruments
  • Advanced working knowledge with Excel, Word and Microsoft Office suite of products

  • Experience with Yardi ERP is an asset
